If you have recently received an estimate for an auto repair, your mechanic probably broke your estimate down into parts and labor. While you have no control over the amount or cost of labor, you can always buy auto parts from somewhere else. It often makes sense to do so, and you may even reap a few extra benefits. 1. Costs
The number one reason to buy car parts yourself for any necessary repairs is the cost savings involved. Most repair shops mark up the price of the parts they order for you.
This markup varies from shop to shop but may be as much as 100% on cheaper parts and less on more expensive parts. When a $12 belt becomes a $24 belt, it is less noticeable or painful than a 50% markup or $250 increase on a $500 part.
When you buy your auto parts, you can purchase your parts much cheaper than you can get them from the repair shop. You may even save more if you have time to shop around.
You can choose from national parts stores or online retailers. Many parts stores will even deliver your parts directly to the repair shop.
2. Quality
There are three different types of auto parts. They are:
- Genuine
- Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
- Aftermarket
You can break each category down further into rebuilt, refurbished, or used parts. When you choose to buy auto parts, you get to choose which parts you purchase for your vehicle.
While most repair shops are very forthcoming on the types of parts they use, when you purchase your own, you know exactly what you are getting.
3. Warranties
When you buy your car parts, you can often find better warranties than what the repair shop offers. Many times these better warranties are those provided directly by the manufacturer.
Your warranty is also portable if you purchase your parts from national parts stores. The manufacturer will honor your contract no matter where you are when you need a replacement.
If your warranty is tied to a local repair shop, you will have to return to them for the repair. Unfortunately, while the warranty may cover the repair, it often does not cover the labor to reinstall the new part. Covering the work is a service your repair shop may offer if you purchase the parts from them.
